Dear Anon, Katie's right - for MAC to sell it under the eye category on the US website would be against FDA regulations and therefore illegal. Yes, there are neon colorants that are approved in the UK and other countries, but that has no bearing on US law.
Just because it says you shouldn't use it in the eye area, doesn't mean you can't. It just says that because the US's FDA regulations deems most neon colors unsafe for the eye for some reason. However, if you go to the UK that would not be the case. MAC answered by saying it is unsafe for the eye b/c, if they said you could use it on the eye and you did and you got a reaction they could get in trouble b/c of the FDA. Test it on your eye and see if it gives you a reaction, if not you're fine.
I’d really rather not risk getting an allergic reaction, or it getting in my eyes. I need those! haha But if the US’s FDA doesn’t deem it safe for eyes… doesn’t that mean they can’t sell it under the eye category in the US?
I think generally, it's just easier to lump them all together. However I do think that in store it should be divided between eye/lip safe. Like MUFE aqua creams (although some of them can still be used on eyes even if they're meant for lips) For future reference, pigments that are red/pink are almost always not eye safe. So it's best to just assume that it's not eye safe if it's red/pink if you can't find the disclaimer for eye/lip safety. :)
That does make sense! They should put a disclaimer on the website that says “This is for lips only” and blah blah blah! They shouldn’t just hope that the consumer reads the box!
I’ve got a little bit of a rant here, so be warned.
A little while ago, I went to a MAC store in search of some eyeshadows. When we got there, I asked the sales girl for any extremely bright, crazy eyeshadows. She gave me this hot, hot pink pigment (Magenta Madness) It was gorgeous! I bought it, brought it home and then read the label… “DO NOT USE IN THE EYE AREA”
I was annoyed, but it could have been an honest mistake. The girl could have been new, just forgot… anything. I go on their website and see that they are selling it under the eye category. Why would they sell something that is not meant for eyes… under the eye category? Here’s the link, http://www.maccosmetics.com/product/shaded/154/372/Pigment/index.tmpl It’s under eye, shadows, pigments.
So I sent MAC an email asking them about it. This is their response.
With regard to your inquiry, Magenta Madness is recommended for use in the Lip area only. All pigments and other ingredients used in the manufacture of our cosmetics are safe. We would never use an ingredient that was considered unsafe for cosmetic use. But, some ingredients such as colour pigments are safest when used in a specific way. Occasionally we develop a colour product that contains one or more ingredients that have a specific usage requirement. For example, a blush that is perfectly safe for use on the face but is not recommended for use on the lips because then it might be ingested. Although it might be perfectly safe used in that way, we cannot recommend that usage because we have no testing supporting it.
Still doesn’t explain why you’re selling it in the incorrect category! I researched it online and apparently some of the pigments may not be crushed enough and can scratch and damage your eyes. Yet they continue to sell it for eyes?
I sent them back another email asking them why they are selling an unsafe product for the eyes in the wrong category.. they ignored me. Obviously they’re just going to brush it off and continue selling unsafe products!
You wouldn’t buy food from a store that might have poison in it, but they don’t know if it does… because they don’t test it. Why take the risk?
It’s a little unsettling. I would like to buy something and have complete faith that the description isn’t a lie. Selling for eyes! But unsafe for eyes!
Perhaps one of you guys could explain this? I am fairly new with MAC so maybe I’m just missing something?
